MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

In lieu of the annual MCA Zine Fair in 2021, the Museum of Contemporary art approached me to create an infographic with two collaborators & talk on their panel discussing the future of Zine making and the role cultural & arts institutions play in it.

A zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation.

Working with collaborators Mika Benesh & Naomi Segal, our goal was to utilise this opportunity to speak directly to the new generation of young makers and provide them with a realistic, actionable resource they could use to create space for themselves.

Notes This project was very special to work on, especially in the shared hands of Mika & Naomi. The MCA Zine fair is beloved, and was sorely missed during the pandemic. Creating a resource for zine makers to pave their own way without huge institutions felt like a genuine step getting back towards the true roots of zine making and publishing.

“Although zine fairs are vital opportunities for artists to generate income from their work, we should also encourage other programs - like zine libraries, reading groups, art installations and workshops - that do not exclusively prioritise the marketability and profitability of the zine.”
